Tell your MoCs to be Dream Heroes.

Indivisibles,

Donald Trump is racist.

This was clear when he was a businessman and gave preferential treatment to whites applying for rental units in his buildings in the 1970s. It was clear in 1989 when he took out $85,000 worth of ads in New York newspapers calling for the death penalty of the Central Park Five (who were later exonerated by DNA evidence). It was clear when he led outrageous, years-long charges falsely claiming President Obama faked his birth certificate. And he made racism the backbone of his campaign from the moment he announced his candidacy and used his speech to attack immigrants.

Now that he’s president, Trump’s racism is shaping our nation’s policies and the lives of immigrants and communities of color each and every day. The “Muslim ban”. Pardoning Joe Arpaio. Attacking Colin Kaepernick. Ending Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from El Salvador and Haiti.

The best way to reject Trump’s racism right now is to protect the people who he wants to deport.

In September, the Trump Administration upended the lives of nearly 800,000 DREAMers when he rescinded an Obama-era executive action that allowed young undocumented Americans to obtain job permits and live, temporarily, without the fear deportation. Even more, he punted responsibility to Congress who has yet to act.

Democrats’ best chance to fight for the safety and protection of Dreamers has been through withholding votes on “continuing resolutions” (CRs), short-term government funding extensions (check out our explainer here). To pass a CR and keep the government open, Republicans need 60 votes (including 9 Democrats!). Initially, just a few Democrats stepped up to be Dream Heroes but, by the end of December, more than 30 Democrats in the Senate and all Democratic members in the House voted against the last CR because it didn’t include protections for Dreamers.

Congress must pass another CR by Friday, January 19, to keep the government open. That means Democrats have another opportunity to ensure the safety and protection of Dreamers by passing the Dream Act as part of any spending bill. Here’s what you can do right now to hold your members of Congress (MoCs) accountable and ask them to stand up for Dreamers:

  1. Visit DreamerPledge.org to read up on the fight ahead.

  2. Find out if your MoCs were Dream Heroes or Dream Killers in December. If one of your Senators was a hero, thank them for their vote and demand they do the same this Friday. If they voted to deport Dreamers, tell them you want them to vote against the CR this Friday if there are no protections for Dreamers.

  3. Call your Senators using our toll-free line at 1-855-980-2355. You’ll be prompted for your zip code and immediately connected to your Senator. Call back again and you’ll be connected to your other Senator!

Immigrant youth have waited too long for a permanent solution to the crisis created by Trump’s vicious deportation agenda. 122 Dreamers lose their protection every day. The time for hesitation is over. See where your Senators stand and make a call to Senators who are voting to deport Dreamers.

This Week on Capitol Hill

After you’ve called both of your Senators about protecting Dreamers, make sure to take action to stop the expansion of Trump’s surveillance authority, protect the Iran deal, stand up for those on Medicaid and CHIP, and read this week’s #TrumpThreatLevel:

  • On Friday, Trump dealt another blow to the Iran nuclear deal by ‘de-certifying’ Iran’s compliance with the deal. The deal is working: he is wrong about Iran’s actions, and he is ratcheting up the rhetoric that could send us into war. (Not exactly the work of a very stable genius.) Congress now has an opportunity to decide whether they will go along with him. If they vote to impose new sanctions on Iran, it could make a tense situation even more volatile. Help us send a message to Congress that they should protect the Iran deal, and keep us from moving closer to war.
  • Congress must fund CHIP. The CBO released an estimate earlier this week that showed reauthorizing funding for CHIP for 10 years would save the government money. States are preparing to kick kids off their coverage as early as next month if Congress doesn’t act -- it’s well past time that they do. Call your MoC and tell them why they must reauthorize CHIP now.
  • Your weekly #TrumpThreatLevel: Trump’s racism endangers us as a nation. His comments last week about Haiti and African countries are further evidence that white supremacy is the lodestar of his administration. This isolates allies and makes it harder for soldiers, diplomats, and activists to do their jobs internationally. Click here to see our running list of all the ways Trump is putting us at risk.
