Our movement has the momentum

Dear Byong,

In just a few hours, Donald Trump will deliver his first State of the Union (SOTU) address. We don’t have to see the speech to know will happen (though, we’ll be live-tweeting):

  1. He will lie to you throughout the entire speech.
  2. There will be a lot of pageantry (so much clapping!).
  3. The pundits will swoon over it (will he finally become President?!).

But facts will be nowhere to be found during Trump’s speech. He will pitch his $1.8 trillion infrastructure plan, a thinly-veiled attempt to sell off public goods and give more tax credits to private equity firms, corporations, and billionaires. He’ll attempt to sell his nativist immigration plan, which holds Dreamers hostage for a border wall and brutal enforcement policies. Lastly, he’ll tout his biggest “accomplishment” -- the Trump Tax Scam -- as a job creator instead of the corporate giveaway it really is.

This weekend, we learned Trump and congressional Republicans won’t be alone in selling these scams to the American people. The Koch brothers have pledged $400 million to support Republican candidates from now until Election Day, with $20 million of that going to a misinformation campaign about the Tax Scam. House Speaker Paul Ryan even filmed a special thank you video for their network of super-wealthy donors (because of course he did).

This is the most the Kochs have ever spent in a midterm election. They’re throwing as much money as they can to save vulnerable Republicans because they’re afraid of our movement and the power we’ve built over the past year. They can see the big blue wave coming in November, and they’re doing everything in their power to halt our progress.

Chip in $26 to help fund Indivisible435 -- our strategy to build the electoral tidal wave that will put progressives back in power! Here’s how your donation will be used to win in November:

  • Expanding the map for progressives: While so much of the focus will only be on certain races, we’re building capacity in all 435 congressional districts (really!). It’s how we made a difference in Alabama and in rural parts of Virginia, and it’s how we’ll win in November.
  • Demystifying elections: We’re publishing guides and providing voter contact tools to help our groups in every Congressional district navigate the elections, just like we helped them navigate Congress last year. You can expect more throughout the year -- we’ve published guides on how elections work, explaining voter ID, and helping your friends and neighbors register to vote -- and we can’t wait to release our Get Out the Vote (GOTV) guide!
  • Growing the electorate: We’re reaching and engaging with communities who’ve been historically underrepresented in the political process: communities of color, immigrants, and young Americans. We’re also fighting back against voting hurdles and registering tens of thousands of people to vote.

Even though $400 million is a lot of money, we know how to fight back. We might not have the Koch’s money, but we have the people and the momentum -- and that can change the narrative and influence politics at both the local and national levels.

Just yesterday, another top Republican, Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (NJ-11), announced he would not run for re-election, which makes 33 Republican retirements in the last year. Indivisibles in New Jersey have worked since 2016 to get Rep. Frelinghuysen to listen to his constituents, showing up every Friday (shout out to Fridays with Frelinghuysen!) at his district office. But instead of or holding a town hall or listening to his constituents, he decided to retire instead.

This is the kind of home-turf constituent power we’re talking about. Republicans who’ve allied themselves with Trump are running scared and retiring in record numbers, and we’re going to keep that trend going in November and we’re going to keep that trend going and run them out of office with Indivisible435!

Donate now to help us build our movement in every corner of the country so we can take back power in November.

The American people are already tired of the chaos and cruelty that define his administration and agenda. Our movement has the momentum, no matter what is said tonight by Trump or the pundits.

In solidarity,
The Indivisible Team

PS: If you’re watching and tweeting along with the SOTU tonight, include the hashtag #IndivisibleSOTU! It’ll help us see your tweet and amplify it.
