Indivisibles,

Pop quiz:
At a rally in New Jersey this weekend, Trump referred to the following person as a “late great…wonderful man”

  1. Henry Ford
  2. Hannibal Lecter
  3. Kim Jong-Il
  4. George Washington

If you answered Hannibal Lecter (the cannibalistic murderer featured in the horror film The Silence of the Lambs), you are correct.

While going off script at a campaign event estimated to have been attended by approximately 100,000 people (LOL!!) by a city spokesperson, Donald Trump stated, “the late, great Hannibal Lecter is a wonderful man.” You read that right. That is one more example of Trump’s ability to say whatever he wants, in full view of thousands of people, with no repercussions.

And it’s not just that -- those alleged 100,000 people showed up AFTER it had come to light that Trump essentially begged for a bribe from oil executives, asking for $1 billion in campaign donations in return for Trump assuring them he would roll back environmental protections.

Trump continues to court extremists and billionaires to fund his potential ascension back to the Oval Office, all the while One Nation, a conservative group, has dropped $70 million on Senate battleground districts to win him the Senate majority he’ll need to enact his horrific policy nightmares.

So, we have a narcissistic, power-hungry authoritarian, who is proving time and again that he can do and say whatever he wants without losing his base, being propped up by billionaires attempting to ride his wave of power right to record profits at the expense of the American people and the world itself.

Sound about right?

If that’s not the world you want to live in, it’s time to get to work. Here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. RSVP for the Majority over MAGA Weekend of Action Kickoff Call on Thursday, June 13 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. The Dobbs decision changed the course of contemporary American politics by making it clear to all of us that MAGA Republicans weren’t just here to make threats, they were going to follow through and rip away our rights. Help us use that anniversary to remind people that there’s a better option. Join the kickoff call to hear about how we’ll be highlighting the fight for reproductive rights during our upcoming weekend of action on June 21-24. For more information on the weekend of action itself, check out our Majority over MAGA Weekend of Action (June 21-24) Toolkit.
  2. Check and see if Neighbor2Neighbor is available in your area. We have opened pre-registration for Indivisible Action’s version of our highly effective, community conversation program -- Neighbor2Neighbor. If you want to have the biggest impact on voter turnout, this is the most effective way we’ve found to mobilize community members (our numbers prove it). Check and see if Neighbor2Neighbor is available in your area and, if it is, sign up today.
  3. Sign up to defend democracy from Trump with Project 2024: Majority Over MAGA. Our Project 2024 was made in direct opposition to Trump’s dangerous MAGA objectives. This new electoral program will ensure Indivisibles all across the country have the opportunity to make a difference in the highest-priority races this cycle and prevent a MAGA catastrophe from taking place. This will include tactics like phonebanking, postcarding, and direct-to-voter texting along with our groundbreaking community conversation strategy: Neighbor2Neighbor. Sign up to be the first to know when we launch our tools in your area.
  4. Call your senator and demand they protect in vitro fertilization (IVF) access nationwide. The MAGA agenda did not just stop at repealing Roe. They intend to ban contraception, IVF, gender-affirming care, marriage equality, and more. Sen. Tammy Duckworth has introduced the Access to Family Building Act, a bill that would enshrine access to IVF and related services as a federal right, protecting both would-be families and their medical providers. If your senator is a Democrat, call and make sure they are a cosponsor. If your senator is a Republican, tell them to put their money where their mouth is, pass this bill, and actually support families. When you’re finished calling, send your senators an email urging them to protect IVF access.
  5. Email your MoC about cosponsoring H.R. 732 -- the Save Medicare Act. We know the MAGA agenda includes ending Medicare as we know it -- and a big part of their scheme includes handing the reins to private insurers. But we’ve seen what happens when greedy insurance companies are put in charge: Medicare Advantage, the privatized option for Medicare, is rampant with fraud and overspending. If we allow insurance companies unchecked power to run the program, we risk sticking millions of Americans with coverage that promises quality healthcare only to deny coverage for essential care and services. Congress must hold these predatory Medicare Advantage plans accountable, and that starts with blocking the deceptive naming of these private plans.

P.S. If you've already signed up to volunteer with Project 2024 and you're looking for more ways to support our election work, consider making a donation today. Your contribution will ensure all of our volunteers have the tools and resources they need to get out the vote and defeat MAGA up and down the ballot.

Crisis in Gaza

**Content Warning: Talk about the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic.**

In case you missed it over the weekend, in his newsletter, Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra Levin highlighted strategies for building a winning coalition during divisive times -- and, well, we think you should read it because we know that this is an issue that you’re thinking a lot about.

In his email, Ezra shares three major reflections from the conversations that he’s had with Indivisibles across the country: shock at the brutal violence from both Hamas and Netanyahu, the strong desire for a ceasefire and the safe return of hostages, and concerns about how the Gaza conflict is fracturing our Democratic coalition, potentially diverting focus from the threats posed by Trump and MAGA. He also addresses questions that we get from Indivisibles every time we send an email like this one, such as why Indivisible isn't calling on Hamas to release hostages (real talk: we focus on the decision-makers who are accountable to us):

One of the questions I get a lot is: Why aren’t you calling on Hamas to release the hostages? And my answer is: Indivisible regularly does that. But let’s be real: A virulently antisemitic and anti-American militant group does not care what a Jewish-led organization supporting a movement of American activists has to say. When we’re building advocacy strategies, we focus on the decision makers who are accountable to us. That’s our own government — and that government has a lot of sway with Netanyahu. And we should expect our government to uphold international humanitarian law regardless of what our adversaries do.

Ezra’s weekend email also covers the huge shift we saw from the Biden administration last week when Biden informed Netanyahu that he will withhold offensive weaponry if Netanyahu proceeds with an invasion of Rafah and how that move illustrates a central argument in favor of his presidency that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez made two weeks ago. A vote for president isn’t a vote for your favorite policies. It’s a vote for who you organize under to push for your favorite policies.

Like Ezra said, this isn’t over -- building a winning pro-democracy coalition in this environment isn’t easy, but the news this week made us all more confident we can achieve it.

We hope you'll take a few minutes to read Ezra's email on Medium -- and if you can, we hope you'll join Ezra and Leah for a coffee chat on Friday, May 31 at 4pm ET/1pm PT to discuss the ongoing crisis and how we move forward together.

Indivisible Civics' Spring Into Action

Powering Progress Spring Into Action

Spring Into Action with the Indivisible Civics Powering Progress campaign. The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has had a big impact on the lives of Americans across the country. The problem: Most Americans don’t even know about it.

Whether it’s new green projects popping up in neighborhoods across America, a $35 cap on the price of insulin for Medicare, or the approximately 9 million jobs that will be created in the next 10 years, the IRA is touching every corner of the country and we need to make sure the people know so they can take advantage of the benefits.

Through May, we will be sponsoring our Spring Into Action movement moment with events all across the country celebrating the benefits of the IRA. But we need your help.

  1. Use this toolkit to find out everything you need to know about how we can help you plan an event to celebrate the IRA.
  2. Make sure to register your event with us so that you can qualify for reimbursements and support.
