Indivisibles,
I want to introduce you to someone. Remember when we said “We get the Democratic Party we demand?”
Georgia State Representative Dr. Jasmine Clark is running for Congress and demanding a Democratic Party that fights. But she’s up against powerful status quo forces. Her primary against a corrupt, corporate-backed, conservative Dem is in exactly three months, and while local Indivisible groups are already supporting her, I am asking the Indivisible movement nationwide to get behind her, too. If that’s enough for you, you can donate directly to her campaign here -- your contribution will go to her, nothing to Indivisible. If you want more of my thinking, read on.
What Democrats think of Democrats. This week The New York Times ran one of their focus group conversations, this time with 13 rank and file Democratic voters. They asked these Democrats from around the country what they thought of the Democratic Party. Here are some verbatim responses:
Spineless. More complacent than I thought they would be. Afraid. Incompetent. Suffocated. Sellouts and suckers. Immobilized. Can I say no balls? No cojones.
We all agree the biggest problem facing the country is the fascist in the White House and his goonsquad ripping up our Constitution. That’s why we desperately want a Democratic Party that unifies and fights back, and it’s why so many rank-and-file Democratic voters are frustrated with the party right now. If you’ve ever joined What’s the Plan, you know I wholeheartedly agree with that frustration!
But let me also say this: I am sick of just complaining about Democratic Party leadership. Just complaining doesn’t change anything. I want to do something about it. I want to demand a Democratic Party that fights.
Georgia-13. A case study in unnecessary capitulation. Here’s a tough truth: While there are around 130 safe Democratic House districts in this country, there are not 130 fighting Democratic members in congress. Despite being safely blue politically, some of these districts have do-nothing Dems representing them, and those members steer the party in a do-nothing direction.
One of those districts in Georgia-13. This is a solid blue district that voted for Harris by 43 points! So the Georgia-13 representative is probably some kind of progressive champion, right? A real leader in the fight against fascism?
No.
David Scott represents Georgia-13. Scott has been an elected politician for fifty years, the last 23 representing this district. Let’s review some recent highlights from his career:
- Named one of the most corrupt members of Congress
- Supported by AIPAC and corporations who fuel his campaigns
- Voted to thank ICE for its service last year
- Voted for additional ICE funding last month
- Didn’t vote for Kamala Harris -- or in several other recent elections
- So neglectful of his duties he was stripped of his committee leadership position
Why on earth is this kind of Democrat still representing this kind of safe Democratic district? Because we haven’t demanded better. But we are going to demand it now.
The challenger: Rep. Dr. Jasmine Clark. Clark is a scientist, educator, legislator, and millennial mom who ran for and won a Georgia state house seat a few years ago, “to be a voice for science and truth in the face of Republican disinformation.” As a state rep, she’s made a name for herself taking on Republican fascism head-on, defending abortion access, voting rights, and public health. She’s exactly the kind of Democrat who should be representing this district.
But challenging and defeating a 50-year elected incumbent is no small task. And she needs our support to win because she’s rejected the support of AIPAC and crypto and corporations and all of the funders of fascism. One concrete way we can act on our support is by donating to her campaign right now.
That’s my pitch for her. And because I like to put my money where my mouth is, as I was writing this email, I personally donated $100 to her campaign. That’s not a ton, but it’s something. And if we all do something, it’ll be a ton.

I hope you’ll join me in demanding a Democratic Party that fights by supporting Dr. Jasmine Clark today. If enough of us do, we’re going to win this primary, we’re going to build a unified opposition party, and we’re going to crush the regime in the midterms. That’s the plan.
In solidarity, Ezra Levin Co-Executive Director, Indivisible
PS: If you want to catch more of Clark, we’re interviewing her on What’s the Plan today, which you can find on the podcast tomorrow!
