Indivisible

Indivisibles,

I feel in my bones that we need a Democratic Party that fights back. And I’m more convinced than ever we’re only going to get that party if we do the work to demand it. I’m writing in the wake of the US Supreme Court decision gutting the Voting Rights Act, the Virginia Supreme Court overturning the voter-approved maps, and a Democratic response which was… lackluster. This party can be saved, strengthened, emboldened, and rejuvenated -- but it will only change if we rally around leaders who want to change it. This is why I’m writing to you to ask that you chip in to Randy Villegas’ campaign for Congress.

I don’t write a ton of these emails, but when I do, I hope you know I mean it -- this is a real strategic opportunity to strengthen the Democratic Party and I hope everybody in the Indivisible movement will support Randy. We need to now because some of the big forces behind the status quo are trying to tank him. If that’s enough for you, you can split a donation between Randy and Indivisible’s campaign in his district here. If you want more of my thoughts, read on!

Randy Villegas will be a kick ass congressman. If you didn’t catch it, I highly recommend you check out at least the first half of last week’s What’s the Plan, where Randy Villegas joined me and Leah for a chat. Randy shines all on his own, but I’ll give the cliffs notes:

  • Villegas is the son of Mexican immigrants who has dedicated his life and career to fighting for his neighbors.
  • He’s the only candidate in CA-22 who is committed to not taking a dime of money from AI, Crypto, AIPAC, or any corporate PACs.
  • He’s prioritizing family leave, child care, fixing our broken immigration system, and bringing accountability to Trump’s regime.

Randy built grassroots and national support. Indivisible always takes direction from local Indivisible groups on primaries. After La Raza Indivisible endorsed Villegas, we held a vote of Indivisibles in this district, where a supermajority of Indivisibles voted in favor of a national endorsement. Now we’re investing in local organizing and resources to help Villegas win.

He’s got the support of the local Democratic parties, as well as luminaries like Dolores Huerta, national grassroots groups like Working Families Party, National Educators Association, and David Hogg’s Leaders We Deserve, and some of our favorites in Congress like Pramila Jayapal, Maxwell Frost, Greg Casar, and Bernie Sanders.

DCCC blunders in. Despite not taking a dollar from PACs, all of this support has translated into making Randy by far the best fundraiser in the race to flip this district blue. Sounds like a slam dunk, right? Well, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) -- the arm of the national party charged with winning the House -- disagrees.

Last week, the DCCC picked a different candidate in this Democratic primary: State assembly member Jasmeet Bains. Who is Bains? I’ll give you the cliffs notes there too:

  • Campaign finance records from her career show that Bains shares over 50 of the same corporate donors with the Republican in the race.
  • Bains has taken over $800k from big pharma, healthcare companies, and corporate polluters, while voting against healthcare and environmental reforms.
  • AIPAC is investing $500k in the district -- $300k for Bains, and $200k for the Republican.

And get this: Bains is the only Democrat in the entire California Assembly who voted with Republicans against the new California congressional maps. Not only would this district not exist if Bains had won that fight, but Trump would be able to count on five more House seats headed into November.

Bains is the prototypical status quo Democrat -- the same kind of Democrat the DCCC anointed in 2022 and 2024 for this district… losing both times. But the DCCC does not get to decide who the nominee is -- the voters do.

This isn’t about them -- it’s about us. Look, I’m not here to tell you I’ve cracked the code for the “right” kind of Democrat in every district in the country. But what I do believe is that the national Democratic Party should not be parachuting into your town, ignoring the actual constituents, and putting their thumbs on the scale in competitive primaries. Leave it to the locals to select who they want in the primaries, and then rally whoever wins to defeat the Republican.

If you want to help send that message and at the same time rally around a rising star in the party, please help us get Randy across the finish line in this race by throwing a few bucks into the hat here. I believe in putting my money where my mouth is, so I just donated $200 to his campaign -- not enough on its own, but Randy will have plenty to run his campaign if we all contribute what we can.

I hope you’ll join me in building a Democratic Party that fights and wins. We can have that kind of party, we just have to demand it -- and supporting Randy and the local organizing behind him is one practical, concrete way we can do that together.
