Indivisibles,
This morning, the corrupt ultra-conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court ruled that states may bar transgender girls and women from playing on school sports teams that match their gender identity.
This is just the latest attempt from Trump-installed sycophants to legislate trans people out of existence and push trans youth further into the shadows, causing intentional and unnecessary harm to trans youth, their families, and communities. In a 6-3 decision, the justices have further greenlit discrimination against trans people, likely empowering even more states across the country to pass legislation targeting trans youth from playing sports.
One of the cases the Court considered, West Virginia v. B.P.J., centered solely around an 11-year-old (at the time of the case’s filing) trans girl in West Virginia. The legislation in question focused on a single child -- and will now have far-reaching negative and dangerous consequences for trans youth and families across the US.
That’s right: The Supreme Court’s rightwing majority just supported West Virginia Republicans’ efforts to stop an 11 year old from playing with her friends.
The stakes could not be higher. The Trevor Project reports that in a 2024 national survey, “90% of LGBTQ+ youth said their well-being was negatively impacted due to recent politics.” Anti-transgender state laws directly cause significant increases in suicide attempts by trans and non-binary youth by as much as 72%. Instead of helping make folks’ lives better, conservative politicians and justices are demonizing kids, disempowering families, and tearing apart communities.
Among Indivisible members, there are trans folks across the US -- and countless more family members, friends, and loved ones who are also impacted by these attacks and ready to take action as allies. Whether you are trans, a family member, or an ally, you have the ability to take action on behalf of trans youth.
Here are a few ways you can act:
- Join Families United for Trans Rights tonight, June 30, at 8pm ET/5pm PT for a discussion with organizers who are building visible and vocal communities of families and allies to show up in solidarity with our trans loved ones. As we feel the impact of the fight for trans rights in our courts, state houses, media, and public sphere, this is a critical approach to defend rights, equality, and dignity.
- Connect with a local PFLAG chapter. With over 360 local chapters, PFLAG works to build supportive networks of support, education, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth in communities across the US. Learn more here.
- Donate to organizations serving trans young people in particular, such as The Campaign for Southern Equality’s Trans Youth Project or Advocates for Trans Equality.
- Demand your Members of Congress stand up for trans folks by organizing a district office visit. Here are some tips from Families United for Trans Rights (FUTR) to help plan your meeting.
Thank you for taking action for trans youth.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
