Indivisibles,
We’ve got some breaking news to share with you from Capitol Hill, and brace yourself: It’s actually good!
Early this morning, Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced that Republicans don’t have the votes to pass the corruption-enabling CLARITY Act before the Senate goes on recess this weekend.
For those who’ve been with us for a while, you’ve been hearing us rail against this legislation. It’s a Trump and crypto industry-backed crypto regulation bill, which means exactly what you’d imagine: It does next to nothing to regulate a massively corrupt industry and absolutely nothing to prevent Trump and his family from receiving bribes via their cryptocurrencies.
The quick and dirty recap:
- The CLARITY Act moves regulation authority from the SEC -- the strongest financial regulatory agency on the planet -- to a much weaker agency. Wonder why crypto scammers would want that?
- It preempts states from prosecuting fraud perpetrated by the crypto industry against consumers.
- And perhaps most significantly, given that Trump has made over a billion dollars from his crypto entanglements since his reelection, it does not block politicians from issuing cryptocurrencies. The selling of crypto coins -- make-believe virtual products -- has made it easier than ever for politicians to accept massive bribes from those seeking to influence policy. And this bill would keep it perfectly legal.
So, how did this bill stall? The answer is simple: Grassroots pressure. YOU kept this bill from passing with your calls, emails, and in-person actions.
This same legislation passed with the support of 78 Democrats in the House last year, and the crypto industry has spent unbelievable amounts of money this cycle to intimidate members of Congress against defying it.
But despite all that spending, Senate Democrats, and even some wary Republicans, are refusing to line up behind this bill because enough people made this vote politically toxic.
The fight isn’t over -- a vote is likely to take place when the Senate returns in September.
So let’s keep up the pressure: Use our tool to dash off an email to your senators urging them to hold the line against Trump’s corruption and crypto industry fraud.
In solidarity, Indivisible Team
P.S. Most Americans don’t really understand cryptocurrency -- so if you read this email and felt like you could use a bit of 101, you’re not alone. Our friend Ben McKenzie (who you might know from The OC or our recent episode of What’s the Plan), is doing a live streaming of his documentary “Everyone Is Lying to You for Money” followed by a Q&A on August 22.
