Indivisible

Mary Ann,

In case you missed our email last night, we wanted to make sure you saw the big news: The anti-democratic MAGA power grab known as Issue 1 was defeated overwhelmingly by Ohio voters.

AP headline reading Voters in Ohio reject GOP-backed proposal that would have made it tougher to protect abortion rights

Ohio Republicans tried to rewrite the rules of democracy in the dead of summer to virtually eliminate the ability of voters to amend their constitution. They hoped their scheme would go unnoticed by the people of Ohio -- just months ago, the Republican Secretary of State predicted single-digit turnout.

But activists in the state and Indivisibles across the country stepped up to get out the vote, and woah -- did we ever. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to send over 220,000 texts to voters and support our Ohio groups as they ran non-stop canvassing shifts, organized hundreds of phone banks, and sent out thousands of GOTV postcards. Over three million votes were cast -- numbers that approach some recent midterm elections.

Because of this last-minute, herculean effort by pro-choice, pro-democracy activists -- Indivisible and allies -- voters in Ohio still have a path to circumventing the gerrymander-guaranteed MAGA majority. In fact, this win means Ohioans likely have a chance to unrig the maps next fall.

More immediately, Ohio voters will have the opportunity this November to overturn the state’s draconian abortion ban and pass a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedoms in Ohio.

Yesterday's victory was an essential step in the fight to end one of the country’s worst abortion bans -- but it was only the first step. If you’re ready to finish the job, we hope you’ll chip in and help us mobilize to protect abortion rights in November >>

Republicans in Ohio openly acknowledged that yesterday’s election was 100% about thwarting the November ballot initiative on abortion. Think about that: They hastily scheduled an extremely expensive special election to make it harder for voters to protect reproductive rights at the ballot box.

So just imagine how desperately MAGA will fight over the next three months with abortion actually on the ballot. And because Ohio will be the only state with a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights in front of voters this November, they’re going to have a massive amount of anti-choice dark money behind them.

All eyes will be on Ohio as activists in other states consider their own voter-led efforts to overturn abortion bans -- and state Republican parties scheme to stop them.

Indivisible hopes to redouble our effort to win this thing and build momentum for protecting reproductive freedom in 2024. More texts. A national postcard program. Our innovative hyper-local canvassing program, Neighbor2Neighbor. Direct support for activists on the ground getting out the vote.

How much we can do depends on the continued support of Indivisibles like you. We’re starting from scratch as we enter the new phase of this fight, so please -- chip in if you can to help us smash abortion bans and protect the right of every American to control our own bodies.

We’re so grateful to everyone who donated, knocked doors, sent texts, called voters, or posted on social media to bring attention to this election and get out the vote.

Take a moment to savor this win. Then let’s get back to work to secure that even bigger victory in November.

In solidarity,
