Indivisibles,

Just this morning, the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) announced that it will hear arguments in Food and Drug Administration v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine and Danco Laboratories v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine on March 26 which will decide the fate of mifepristone’s use and availability for medication abortion.

That our rights rest on the whims of the exact same MAGA-stacked Supreme Court that overturned 50 years of precedent in Roe v. Wade does not bode well for the future of abortion in the United States. Even short of fully pulling the medication off of pharmacy shelves, any rollback in access is dangerous -- medication abortion accounts for over half of all abortions in the US. It is a stark reminder that this year’s election is not just about keeping Trump out of the White House for the next four years, it is about keeping his extremist proxies out of our courts for generations to come.

And it’s not just SCOTUS.

Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court sent a case back to the lower court today ruling that they must hear a challenge to PA’s law restricting Medicaid dollars from covering the cost of abortions. The challenge hinges on the discriminatory nature of covering medical costs solely for those who carry their pregnancy to term.

And in Florida, the Department of State has informed activists that their petition to put a ballot measure expanding abortion access statewide has achieved the 891,523 signatures necessary to qualify for the ballot. The amendment is now subject to the whims of Florida’s conservative Supreme Court who get to decide whether the voters will even have a chance to vote for their own reproductive rights.

Every one of these cases hinges on the rulings of a court that is directly tied to an election process. Whether it is the direct election of justices in Pennsylvania, or the appointment of judges to SCOTUS and in Florida, our votes decide who decides.

We cannot sit idly by and let MAGA extremists like Trump and DeSantis take control of our futures. It is up to each and every one of us to stand up for autonomy and ensure that the fascists don’t win.

With that, here are your weekly to-dos:

 Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Register for our first National Campaigns Call of the year on Thursday, February 15 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Come get a preview of our 2024 strategy alongside Indivisibles from across the country. We’ll take some time to learn about the tools, tactics, and messaging that are going to make sure we win in November. And, if we’re lucky, we might just be joined by a special guest.
  2. Write a letter to the editor (LTE) about Kate Cox, Brittany Watts, and the harsh reality of Republican abortion laws. It’s easy to focus on the political reality of Republicans’ inhumane abortion laws and forget the real impact. Whether it is Kate Cox having to fly out of state to receive life-saving care agreed upon by her doctor and the courts or Brittany Watts facing potential criminal charges for experiencing a miscarriage, these draconian bans impact real lives. Make sure your community knows about the actual cost of Republican extremism.
  3. Write an LTE on Trump’s dangerous positions on abortion. Nikki Haley is still running, but we know that, barring an incredible change in circumstances, Trump is going to be the Republican nominee. His positions reverberate down to every level of Republican governance, and his glee in helping to dismantle abortion access has directly led to more anti-abortion legislation throughout the country. Remind your community why his positions are so dangerous and what’s at stake.
  4. Record your story of what Roe means to you by texting “ROE” to 59798 or dialing 1-833-942-2884. We want to know exactly what impact Roe has had on your lives. From personal experiences to political awakenings and more, what did the 50 year precedent mean to you? We’re making tribute stories like this one to remind the world just how far-reaching, personal, and necessary Roe has been.
  5. Join our weekly Battleground NY phonebanks for the NY-03 special election on Thursdays at 6pm ET/ 3pm PT. The road to a Democratic majority starts today! When George Santos was expelled from the House of Representatives, Democrats were given an opportunity to start the work of flipping the House early. Though the seat will still be up for re-election in the fall, running the November election from incumbency would be a huge advantage for Democrats. Help us flip this seat now, and then keep it again in November. This event is not just for NY Indivisibles; all are welcome.

P.S. We rely on your support to keep call pages up and running, fund ads to get the word out, and continue all the work we’re doing this year. If you’re able, click here to donate to help fund our work.

Call for a Humanitarian Ceasefire

**Content Warning: Talk about the current humanitarian crisis in Israel and Palestine. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic.**

On Friday, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel must take actions to prevent genocide and ensure humanitarian aid -- a rebuke of Netanyahu’s military campaign in Gaza that stopped just shy of expressly ordering a ceasefire.

While the ruling is non-binding, it is a stark reminder that the eyes of the world are on the humanitarian crisis currently happening in Gaza, and that we have a responsibility to protect Palestinian civilians as conditions continue to deteriorate.

Indivisible issued a new press release that includes:

“The ICJ ruling underscores what we’ve known for months - the humanitarian situation in Gaza is beyond a crisis point, and the ongoing military campaign from Israel is actively exacerbating it and causing a catastrophic loss of civilian Palestinian lives. Beyond the direct bombing and gunfire, the restrictions on food, clean water, and basic medical supplies have put hundreds of thousands at risk of starvation and disease. This must stop.”

It is vital that we do everything in our power to secure the release of all hostages still being detained since October 7th. It is vital that we end the brutal military campaign that has killed at least 26,422 Palestinians including over 10,000 children. And it is vital that the Palestinian people be allowed humanitarian assistance including food, potable water, and medical supplies to prevent this tragedy from growing exponentially.

Call for a ceasefire.
